“Smiles, Trials & Miles” - Emotional, Social & Physical Development

IY Learning Hub runs 3 programmes within the aftercare service we provide for children.

Each of these 3 programmes has been carefully curated and crafted to ensure that we are contributing to building future leaders of society and South Africa who are:

  • Confident in themselves, their abilities and their worth to their community.

  • Able to interact in healthy ways with their peers, work as a team, and overcome social and relational dynamics that may be damaging.

  • Resilient to the trauma and adversity that comes with growing up in a informal settlement, and are able to manage their emotions effectively.

  • Growing strong bodies, with healthy body indicators and a willingness to put time and effort into feeding and exercising their bodies the way it needs.

  • Skilled in generationally appropriate competencies such as digital literacy, media literacy, financial literacy, creativity and innovation and environmental awareness

The smiles, trials and miles programme takes children on a journey each year to growing and having a growth mindset in their emotional health, social skills and the development of their bodies & health.

We learn through play to holistically learn tangible skills to develop in these areas which we can use at school, aftercare and home. These include but aren’t limited to: observed free play, role playing, volunteering, emotional expression, mindfulness, reading, spending time outdoors, working on our fine motor skills, awareness of what we eat and how we move our bodies.
